The midnight sun bakes Fairbanks, Alaska as residents gather for the annual summer solstice baseball game. Amidst shouts of “Play ball!” a spark alights and a jogger bursts into flames. Detective Danny Fitzpatrick, still reeling from his near death at the hands of vampire Aleksei Nechayev, watches in horror as the man burns alive.

Someone is burning Fairbanks and its residents and leaving nothing but smoldering embers behind. As the city sweats under a record-breaking heatwave and unexplained fires claim more victims, Danny and his colleagues struggle to find an arsonist who can conjure fire out of thin air.

To Danny’s horror, the only one who may be able to help him stop the arsonist is his nemesis Nechayev. Will the vampire help in the hunt for a witch?

Polar Night Gets a Facelift!

Polar Night is the first book in the newly designed Polar Magic series by Julie Flanders. After deciding to add another installment to the Polar Magic series, we thought it best to make sure these action-packed novels had a new style.

Originally published in 2013, Polar Night was paranormal detective novel that hooked us into detective Danny Fitzpatrick’s life. Watching him battle some dangerous, murderous paranormal creatures has been such a wild ride. This fall, we will join Danny again as he takes on another puzzling case in Fairbanks, Alaska, but as we wait for the next murder—Polar Night and Polar Day are getting new covers!

Plus, if you haven’t read these novels yet, the first editions are going on sale! Polar Night, edition 1 is on sale for 7.99 on our web store while supplies last! But, if you really love the new cover as much as we do, you can Pre-Order Polar Night, too!

About Polar Night

At noon the sun awakens as rural Dalton highway is painted on the arctic, Alaskan horizon. Silhouetted against the burning haze, a haunted asylum pierces the never-ending sky.

A woman screams.

A silken voice and a powerful grip to the throat persuades her silence. His classic Russian features, not unlike the minted image of Czar Nicolas II, remain frozen in time. “Please do not disappoint me like the others, my darling.”

The doorbell chimes. He releases his hold and caresses her cheek. “Natasha,” escapes his lips as he ascends the creaky wooden stairs. A calm hand opens the door. The glistening snow on the front porch pales against Aleksei’s skin and charming smile.

The callused hand of detective Danny Fitzpatrick flashes a search warrant. His puffy, bloodshot eyes lock onto Aleksei’s …

The young woman cries out, but only Aleksei hears. They will never find you my dear. This beaten and hung over man does not have a clue.

Hours later, the detective crosses the threshold and shudders as if encased in a block of ice. The sun drops to sleep and an eerie shadow creeps alongside him. He shakes his head.

Aleksei watches from the peephole. You feel my immortal essence … do you not? A forceful hand bolts the door. Aleksei probes his elongating eye teeth.

It is time for a new plan …

Polar Day gets its new cover on August 12, 2022!

Fall 2022 Upcoming Releases

It’s been quite a while since Ink Smith Publishing has released more than two books a year. Due to COVID and other interruptions Ink Smith has been slowly getting back into the groove. Fall 2022 is starting to take shape and we are pleased to announce the upcoming publications of three of our current authors’ work. First up, is the relaunching of Polar Night and Polar Day by Julie Flanders. These relaunched, and beautifully designed covers are in preparation for the third book, Polar Curse, in the re-branded Polar Magic series.

Polar Curse by Julie Flanders

Julie Flanders, the author of The Ghosts of Aquinnah, Polar Night, and Polar Day, is releasing the next book in the Polar Magic series: Polar Curse. It started in Fairbanks, and it will end in Fairbanks. Detective Danny Fitzpatrick has dueled with vampires and witches, but something is haunting Fairbanks—and it isn’t just the recent disappearance of a hiker. Eerie voices, accidental deaths and arson keep dragging Danny back to Kennecott cemetery. Back to Annabelle Trescot’s grave. The only theory that makes any sense: a deadly ghost.

With bodies piling up, Danny is forced to seek out Aleksei Nechayev, the murderous vampire, for help. But history has a way of coming back to haunt us, even when the ghosts get what they want.

The Rise of the Azure Spire by J. Edward Hackett

J. Edward Hackett, author of the epic-fantasy novel, The Flight of the Ravenhawk, is back with the sequel to Prince Kals’ adventure. With King Darnashi under the control of necromancy wielded by Prime Magus Encheron, the Wizardlord’s must pledge their allegiance or face the costs of treason.

The Elves of Venda have thrown their support behind Prince Kal, but Kal might be more Allurian than they bargained for. When Kal’s dreams connect to the tortured soul of his brother, King Darnashi—the war takes a much deadlier turn. An army of the dead has risen and Encheron wields their commander.

While Venda and Alluria fight their war, Encheron is making deals with the Shadowland to ensure his own claim over Alluria, but when he promises the Heart of Creation in exchange for his power, he may have doomed them all.

The Witch and the Devourer of Souls by C. David Belt

C. David Belt, author of The Witch of White Lady Hollow, has rocketed us into the future with The Witch and the Devourer of Souls. We find ourselves following an adult, Tabitha Moonshadow, navigating another evil force, in the sequel.

A masked serial killer feeds off the terror of women, devouring their souls… and he’s set his sights on Tabitha.

Tabitha Moonshadow Kilmore is now a young wife and a new mother, as well as a starving university student. And only her husband, her beloved Josh, knows that she’s a witch. And only Tabitha knows that Josh is a warlock—her warlock. They can do nothing apart, but together, they are magnificent.

It’s 1982, and a masked serial killer stalks the streets of tranquil Provo, Utah, abducting and terrorizing women, consuming their fear, and devouring their souls. And the killer has targeted the ultimate prize–the witch, Tabitha.

Reluctantly, Tabitha uses her abilities to aid Provo Police Detective Daniel Folau, a man scarred without and within, to identify and stop the murderer. But can Tabitha and Josh trust Folau? Can they trust any man? After all, any male could be the Devourer of Souls.

Sentinel Peak is a fast-paced mystery with a legendary origin spanning decades, and space. When an alien reconnaissance spacecraft crash landed in Arizona Territory in 1853, the crash site was only briefly investigated by local tribes. It left the ship, and its survivors to fade into legend.

While rekindling an old flame with Anna, the mother of his child, the dreams become more vivid. The more time he spends around Anna the more he realizes she may have some connection to his dreams.

As he digs deeper, he finds that Anna’s history is much more expansive than he thought.

Lightyears away, 143 year-old Ason mMyer, commander of the starship freighter Mnaerias, has received a distress signal from the downed starship on earth.  Ason recognizes the signal as that of the Halaena, a vessel that had mysteriously disappeared with his father.  Ignoring protocol, he decides to take it upon himself to investigate.

As these two move closer together, Dan finds himself caught up in a government investigation and intergalactic mystery that spans decades.  He realizes there’s only one thing left for him to do: go with Anna to Sentinel Peak to uncover what’s behind it all.

Angela Glennon on her debut novel, Wait for It!

AL Glennon1Wait for It, a contemporary young-adult novel with fantasy elements by new Ink Smith author, A.L. Glennon. In Wait for It, three teens take the journey of an afterlifetime, traveling to Hell and back, looking for meaning in great art, bakery-fresh éclairs, and, of course, their relationships with each other.

For Glennon, writing a story is easy and fun. “Rewriting and revising it, though, are torture! I stress over every word and punctuation mark,” she said. She started writing poems and stories in the first grade and has been writing on and off ever since. For Glennon, it’s not an interest, it’s an obsession.

While writing Wait for It, Glennon said one thing she learned was that you have to trust your characters to take you where you need to go next. Even if those characters are leading you straight to Hell, like her characters Martin, Zeke, and Zelda!

Writing is not an easy feat, and writer’s in the past have told us that if they could go back and change something about the book they would. But not Glennon. “Perhaps in hindsight I’ll feel differently, but after all the years of editing, tweaking, adding, and deleting, I think I’d like to leave it just as it is now, thank you very much.”

Inspiration comes from many places, but Glennon thinks it all leads back to one. “Love. I might even go so far to argue that love inspires everything humans create.” But Glennon isn’t just a romantic, she’s got a little bite!

When asked about her writing style, Glennon asked, “Could sarcasm be considered a style?” We think so! She noted that she tries not to take herself or her fictional friends too seriously, even when writing about serious subjects. Her light, flowing words in Wait for It can attest to that—but Glennon still manages to make you feel what her characters are feeling without drowning you in every emotion.

If there is any takeaway to her novel, Glennon wants readers to know that everyone deserves a second chance, “Or in Zeke’s case, sixty chance[s]!”

And if you’re an aspiring writer, Glennon has some advice too. “Just keep writing! Enjoy the process and the time you get to spend alone with your characters in those precious weeks/months/years before you let anyone else meet them.”

Glennon’s debut novel with Ink Smith Publishing, Wait for It, is due out Summer 2019.  Make sure to keep an eye out, the cover reveal is coming! And with it, an opportunity to win a signed copy!

“Thank you so much for taking this journey with Marin, Zeke, and Zelda! (And me!)” Make sure to follow A.L. Glennon on Twitter @ALGlennonAuthor for updates on her book Wait for It!.

Fun Facts about A.L. Glennon

Sometimes reading a book isn’t enough to satisfy our need for a connection with the mind behind the story. We asked A.L. Glennon to share some fun facts about herself so her readers can delve a little into the mind behind Wait for It!.

Her favorite color is red, and her favorite food depends on the day. She did reveal that she can’t live without chocolate, and who can blame her? Sweets are a source of fuel for writers, and brain food is always required when world building. Especially when that world is home to three very different personalities like Mike, Zeke, and Zelda!

Like most authors, and readers, when asked those dreaded questions, “Who’s your favorite author?” and “What’s your favorite book?” she said no! There is no way she could pick just one favorite book or author. “I have loved tons of books for tons of different reasons,” she said.

She did go on to note that she is a big Harry Potter fan. “I love the way J.K. Rowling created a world and characters that appeal to readers of all ages!” Ink Smith Publishing couldn’t agree more. We think Glennon did a solid job making Wait for It! a novel YA readers and adults can enjoy.

Quick Fun Facts:

  1. A.L. Glennon started studying ballet when she was four and still sneaks in a class now and then.
  2. Glennon used to want to be an economist. Then she found out what that really was. After she’d finished an undergraduate degree in economics!
  3. She was a forward (#6) on her college rugby team.
  4. She throws over-the-top theme parties.
  5. She likes baking cakes, and eating them, too!

Welcome to A.L. Glennon!

AUTHOR PORTRAIT BY BOBBY CARTER/BLINKONTWO.COM.

Ink Smith Publishing is happy to announce our new author, A.L. Glennon! A.L. Glennon  has her Master of Arts degree from the Communication, Culture, and Technology Program at Georgetown University. She currently lives in North Carolina with her husband and three sons. Her Ink Smith Publishing debut novel, Wait For It! is due out this summer!

Wait for It! is a contemporary Y.A. novel with fantasy elements. When a freak bathroom accident cuts his Earthly life short, academic bowl team captain Martin Van Assen is surprised to find himself languishing in the waiting room of the Soul Reassignment Office with only the overly dramatic Zelda Kozikowski and her maybe-ex-boyfriend, the oft-reincarnated Zeke Zabar, for company. The unlikely trio gets tired of sitting around with nothing to do but bicker while they wait to start new lives, and sneaks through a portal that takes them back to Earth in ghostly form. The search for meaning in their previous lives takes these three lost souls on the journey of an afterlifetime, all the way to the infernally warm intake office of Hell itself. Martin, Zelda, and Zeke might figure a few things out along the way, but none of it will matter much if they have to spend eternity in a pit of fire. Or worse.

Pre-Order for Wait For It! begins May 15th! Keep an eye out for updates on the pre-order status and author updates on our site. Want to join A.L. Glennon on her writing journey? Make sure to follow her on Twitter @ALGlennonAuthor.
